Located in the Ichukawamisato district of Yamanashi, ONAO is one of Japan’s oldest paper manufacturers and best known for developing Naoron, a water resistant paper made from wood pulp and polyofin. The unique material is soft and flexible but at the same time durable and nearly tear resistant. They recently teamed up with designer Naoto Fukasawa to create a line of bags and accessories with this innovative material under the name Siwa, which means “wrinkle” in Japanese in reference to the natural creasing from usage.
