  I am Anagama No. 19 Black Cube Vase. Sharp-edged and severe, I dwell in darkness, with a hint of red glow lingering at the corners echoing the fire that shaped me. A vessel of contrasts, I invite exploration of my depths.

  The cube-shaped vases in this Anagama series stand out as a departure from Iwata-san’s organic, stone-inspired forms. The Anagama No.19 Black Cube Vase features sharply defined edges and a commanding presence. Fiery orange spots emerge from its deep black surface, giving the impression it was just pulled from the flames. The texture and subtle irregularities suggest a piece shaped by time. While modern in design, it carries a sense of history, making it more than just a vase—it’s a striking statement infused with meaning.

  • One-of-a-kind functional sculpture vase handmade by Keisuke Iwata in Fukuoka, Japan 
  • An Anagama kiln fired piece
  • Flowers and water can be contained through two small holes at the top surface 
  • Water can be inserted into the small holes via a liquid syringe or by submerging the vase in a bucket of water 
  • Created using an ancient Japanese ceramic technique that involves an Anagama woodfired kiln, fired in a ceremonial process by Keisuke Iwata 
  • Anagama works are each unique to the clay's own intimate interactions with the flames and ash
