While his furniture is so widely recognized, Aino's contributions to Finnish design deserve just as much attention.

These coasters take their distinctive shape from Aino's Riihitie Plant Pot, designed in 1937 for the terrace of the Aaltos' home in Helsinki. I love that Hender Scheme chose to revisit this rather unusual, organic form, originally conceived in ceramic, and translate it into something as familiar as a leather coaster.

Made from vegetable-tanned leather, the coasters will gradually darken with exposure to light, moisture, and everyday handling. Even the circular marks left by a glass become part of their character. It's a lovely way to bring a little piece of Aino Aalto's design history to the table, and I especially appreciate that the original shape remains so recognizable despite the change in material and scale.

Coasters were curated by Stevenson Aung

Designer/Maker

Maker: Artek x Hender Scheme

Designer: Alvar Aalto x Ryo Kashiwazaki

Specifications

Dimensions:

3.1" (w) x 4.0" (l) x 0.1" (h) or 7.9 cm (w) x 10.2 cm (l) x 0.3 cm (h)

Materials:

Natural Cow Leather

Details

A special collaboration between Artek and Hender Scheme

Set of 4 coasters

Limited series

Natural raw vegetan leather

Reinterprets Aino Aalto’s signature “Riihitie A” form

Combines Finnish modernist design with Hender Scheme’s Japanese leather craftsmanship

Protects tabletops and other surfaces from glasses and cup spills

Tactile leather surface develops a distinctive patina through everyday use

Leather naturally responds to sunlight and moisture, with marks from glasses and cups becoming part of its evolving character

Uses natural texture of leather, which will vary in color and texture per item

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0194/5843/files/Hender_Scheme_Artek_Coasters_Natural_Featured_6ad60223-6a95-4f2d-9acd-ce2505adfd58.jpg?v=1790804685
