I am a Hakuboku Bowl - 270 x 79mm. I hold a meal that is shared, generous, and grounded. A serving bowl for those who don’t measure portions, just memories.
Once, during an interview, Ryuji Mitani was told that a deep bowl has a way of making food look beautiful, even when little remains inside. That thought stayed with him, and it lives on in his Hakuboku Bowl series. Each signature bowl is finished with layers of white urushi brushed over black lacquer, with a black exterior creating contrast. It also features depth where light and texture shift across the surface. The effect is soft and imperfect, like sunlight diffused through paper.
What I love most is how everything feels elevated inside these forms — rice, fruit, soup, even the last few bites. Their proportions and angled walls make the dish look composed and they’re the kind of bowls that draw out the beauty in food without effort.
