I am a Hakuboku Round Serving Bowl. A small stage for a beautiful meal, held in two hands.
The Hakuboku Round Serving Bowl sits in a unique place within Mitani’s work. Substantial enough to serve from, yet intimate enough to hold in both hands. Though high contrast, the off-white “putty” lacquer creates a soft canvas that seems to brighten whatever is placed inside, whether a simple vegetable side or a bowl of pasta. Even the underside, finished in black with subtle texture, reminds you that every surface has been considered.
What I love most is the tactile consistency throughout. The carved marks, the matte touch, the gentle rise of the wall. It is a serving bowl that invites closeness, meant not for grand feasts, but for the scale of daily life: small gatherings and shared plates.
