Masanobu Ando's background in contemporary art and his practice of ikebana meet in the creation of this hanging wall vase. The typical vase has symmetric curves that taper up to a rounded mouth. Ando-san turns this notion on its head with a simple, block-like construction. Its hand-painted silver glaze and unrefined texture remind me of a Brutalist sculpture, with a sense of strength that radiates from its acceptance of imperfection. The stark "L"-shape is a dynamic focal point, its presence softened with the addition of flowers, but raw and striking on its own.
