I am Harmony in Solitude, a tsutsugaki painting. We may be spending a lot of time solo these days, but I'll make sure to keep us in tune.
Michiaki Mochizuki (望月 通陽) is one of our favorite artists reimagining Japanese traditional arts and craft, so we are honored to feature a series of his original artwork made specifically for Nalata Nalata. Each unique piece in this series is centered around Mochizuki's idiosyncratic understanding of love, which we feel is pertinent in such times of loneliness and uncertainty. The rich tones of this artwork is made using traditional tsutsugaki resist-dye technique, allowing ink to penetrate the fibers of its material base while playing with negative and positive space. This piece comes in a white oak frame designed by Mochizuki's wife and assembled by their friends, ensuring that love is carried through each process of the artwork before it enters your home.
