I am a Hole Children's Chair. It may seem like I’m missing a crucial part, but the satisfaction of lifting up the youngest people makes me feel whole again.
In the heart of Yamagata prefecture—where Tendo Mokko is based—we couldn’t help but notice a set of cute and simple plywood chairs in libraries and kindergartens throughout the region. Tendo Mokko designed the Hole Chair to be comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time, such as in a classroom. The legs, back and seat consist of pieces of bent white beech, which has been compressed and molded to strengthen and harden wood while keeping the chair thin and light. The chair features an upholstered seat made of high performance vinyl leather, which is antifouling, water-resistant and migration-resistant. Not only does the round hole in the back play with the space around it, it also functions as a handle for moving and stacking the chair for storage. Built for children ages 3-8 years old, the Hole Chair is a versatile seat for any setting.
