I am a Noir Teacup with Lid. Small in size, infinite in depth. My darkness reveals every reflection, every pour of tea.
We feel incredibly honored to work with Ryuji Mitani each time he joins us for an exhibition, and one of our favorite parts of this ongoing relationship is developing a collaborative piece together. For this year’s Contained Vessels exhibition, we asked Mitani-san to create something deeply tied to our everyday lives: lidded drinking vessels to keep beverages warm.
The result is two cups that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful — one tall, White Urushi Coffee Cup with Lid and a smaller, Noir Teacup with Lid. The white cup is perfect for coffee, designed for those mornings when life is moving quickly and we find ourselves coming and going, setting down a cup and returning to it later. The snug-fitting lid has just the right amount of weight to help retain heat, and the hand-brushed urushi surface brings out subtle, delicate strokes that will grow richer with use.
The noir teacup, smaller, has deeply faceted carving beneath layers of black lacquer that catch the light like a cut gemstone. Both designs feature Mitani-san's signature chisel marks, highlighting the honesty of the material and the maker’s hand. Over time, they will develop a patina. They are truly a record of daily rituals with each sip, reflecting the beauty of living with an object that only grows more meaningful with age.
