I am a 1 year old School Chair. I might be built for the freshest class, but my workmanship is still steeped in the old school.
We are honored to present Makoto Koizumi’s series of School Chairs—a regional project conceived for schools in Wakayama prefecture—at our Starter Chair exhibition. This simple chair is designed for infants, with curved armrests and a slightly arched backrest built to support their rapidly developing bodies. Made of locally sourced cypress wood, the chair embodies the grace of Wakayama’s forests in the beautiful wood grains on prominent display on its surface. While the chair was initially used for regional schools, we think its simple and elegant shape, light yet sturdy weight, and warm texture and tones provides a welcoming seat for a new member of the family home.
