• Curator's Notes 

   

  Ceramicist Masanobu Ando is a certified Tea Master, and many of his pieces are intended to function within the ancient ritual of tea ceremony. This tea drainer is modeled after a Chinese "brewing tray," a shallow plate that holds the teapot and catches spilled water. In traditional tea ceremony, boiling water is poured into and over the teapot until the water overflows to warm the vessel and help cure the clay. Ando-san reimagines the typical brewing tray as a ceramic sculpture with the craggy surface of a stone and a silver glaze that darkens with use. The slight concavity allows water to drain downwards towards the holes punched in the center, and an opening carved in the side lets you pour out the drained liquid.
