I am a Spice Mill. I stack like a lock and key, sit like a porcelain sculpture, and wake up your spices the moment you twist.
Designed by Makoto Koizumi, the Ambai Spice Mill is one of the most unusual grinders we’ve come across. Made of porcelain, the two forms stack together, like a lock and key. When closed, it reads as a small porcelain sculpture. We genuinely love how it sits on our shelves. Functionally, it’s just as satisfying. The patterned surface grinds seeds, herbs and spices remarkably well. Anything from sesame seeds, fresh pepper, or chili flakes can be ground beautifully, especially when making something like a quick chili oil. It invites you to season food fresh, right when you need it. We’ve even used it to press half a lemon in a pinch when a juicer wasn’t nearby. It’s simple, tactile, and surprisingly versatile. There really isn’t anything else quite like it.
