I am a Table 90C. I've been around awhile, but I've recently developed a taste for fine leather. I fancy myself something of a writing desk now.
When I think of writing desks, one of the first that comes to mind is the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. It's an entirely different piece of furniture, of course, but there's something about the tradition of sitting down at a dedicated surface to write that I've always found appealing. I've especially loved old writing desks with leather inlaid into their tops. There's a wonderful feeling to writing on leather, the slight softness beneath your hand, the warmth of the material, and the pleasure of putting pen to paper.
That's what immediately drew me to this interpretation of Alvar Aalto's Table 90C. Originally designed in 1933, its simple round form and signature bent birch legs remain, but Hender Scheme has upholstered the tabletop in vegetable-tanned leather and fitted the legs with little handmade leather shoes. The leather transforms the experience of using the table, making it particularly inviting for writing, sketching, or sitting down with a book.
I also appreciate the choice of birch, with its natural knots and variations left visible rather than concealed. Together with the leather, it gives the table a character that will only become more personal through use. What makes this collaboration so successful is how comfortably the two design languages sit together. Aalto's original proportions are untouched in spirit, while Hender Scheme brings an entirely new tactile experience. It's a small table, but one that makes me want to slow down and spend a little more time at it.
