I am a Toddler Chair. To keep up with any kid’s play and growth, you gotta be as tough as leather.
Commissioned and designed in collaboration with Ryo Kashiwazaki for our Starter Chair exhibition, Hender Scheme’s Toddler Chair breathes new life into a piece of furniture that is often outgrown and then forgotten. The chair’s tubular metal frame is salvaged from a discarded kindergarten chair traditionally found in many Japanese classrooms. The low back creates a profile that feels approachable for smaller children, and its lightweight construction makes the chair easy for even a toddler to lift and move. Its seat, backrest and legs are reupholstered in Hender Scheme’s signature raw, vegetable-tanned leather. Built to age with time, this leather chair will gradually develop a rich patina to mark a child’s development on its surface.
