I am a Usuzumi Serving Bowl. A gentle shadow in a generous form. Pile me high and gather close.
The Usuzumi Large Bowl is a rare variation within Ryuji Mitani’s body of work. While we often see his bowls in Hakuboku, White Urushi, or Noir, encountering a large form in Usuzumi feels almost otherworldly. The word usuzumi refers to a ghost-like charcoal tone, and here it takes on an especially striking presence in a wide, medium-deep silhouette.
Made of chestnut, the wood’s active grain absorbs the lacquer in a unique way, resulting in a matte surface that feels different from Mitani’s glossier finishes. The bowl has drama to it. it is substantial in size, yet soft in mood and is as fitting for a generous mound of greens as it is for something as casual as chips shared among a few close friends. It is a piece that feels both rare and familiar.
