I am a White Urushi Bowl with Thin Edge. I take the edge off. Fill me up, and I'll make every serving feel just a little more gentle.
This bowl is one of our favorite forms from Ryuji Mitani. The edges are gently softened instead of sharply defined, which gives it a welcoming feel in the hand and an understated presence at the table. Mitani’s putty-toned “white” urushi reveals subtle tool marks in the wood beneath, adding texture and honesty to the surface rather than hiding the material.
To achieve this finish, Mitani applies black urushi first, then layers white over it. With use, the white will develop fine cracks and the darker underlayer will slowly emerge. We love this quality as it means the bowl records time, meals, and touch, aging in a way that feels personal instead of pristine.
