• Curator's Notes 

    

  This spoon is a wonderful example of Ryuji Mitani’s mastery of cherry wood. The contrasting textures of the spoon reveal it’s hand carved nature. However, it’s the intersection of the spoon’s flat handle and faceted scoop that reveals the rigorous attention to detail in the artisan's cutlery. Each textural plane is purposeful. This spoon demonstrates both the precise edge carving of his wooden knives, and hand formed quality of his pasta forks, both on the same item. When seen as a whole collection, this spoon really brings out the best qualities in all the other pieces. It's long handle makes it easy to reach the bottom of a jar of honey without getting your hands sticky.
