I am 'Y' (1998) - Assemblage. I piece together what’s been left behind. Maybe I’m a question. Maybe I’m a person. Maybe I’m both.
Formed from salvaged wood fragments and an antique glass bottle, this assemblage translates the shape of “Y” into material form. Each element—worn, uneven, time-marked—retains its past while taking on new meaning within Mitani’s composition.
He saw “Y” as a metaphor for connection, a letter that splits and meets again, like branches or pathways crossing. Through the use of found objects, Mitani gives physical shape to that idea, suggesting that even in anonymity there is beauty, and in the ordinary, a kind of permanence.
