I am the book Ex-formation. As a book, you might think I'll have all the information, but like all good reads, I'm only formed out of questions.
As we are connected to more information with the internet everyday, Kenya Hara argues for the importance of unknowing in design and creative thinking. Ex-formation continues his ideas around emptiness and the void as developed in Designing Design and White. Based on classes he taught at the Musahino Art University, Hara develops the concept of exformation to describe how little we actually know and how to take that as the starting point of design. This book has been instructive in the way we approach our own projects and for understanding our continued fascination with design. As Hara states, "what moves people's hearts, in every case, is the unknown. Things that people already know don't excite them".
