• Curator's Notes

   

  For our latest in-house product, we wanted an object that can hold its own while getting consistent use in one of our daily rituals, burning incense and palo santo. The idea was to create a plate with a simple and low profile — standing only on three small feet — to let the craftsmanship shine. Hand-casted and hand-lacquered, this plate reflects its material and production process on its surface. While the urushi lacquer helps to prevent rusting and discoloration, we also worked closely with the artisans to develop a finish that combines green tea and sumi ink for a clean yet rich palate well-suited to the weight of this plate. A larger version of the plate can be found here.

  • Handcrafted in Japan
  • Coated with a natural urushi lacquer finish that produces a saturated protective coating

  • The concentric circle texture of the plate occurs from the the sand casted mold 
  • Every plate will be slightly different as it is reflective of the material and production process
  • To prevent rusting, do not leave in water for prolonged periods of time
  • To clean, wipe with a lightly damp cloth and dry immediately
  • Recommended for displaying dry objects, holding loose items or burning incense
  • Can be used for food service with a layer of parchment or traditional Japanese "kaishi" paper to protect the surface
