The Iwata family began making cotton futons in Kyoto in the 1830s. Today, IWATA continues this work, refining their approach with a focus on how materials perform in relation to the body and surrounding climate. Their work is shaped by both traditional craftsmanship and ongoing study of sleep, including how temperature, humidity, and movement affect rest. This includes their use of camel hair, selected for its ability to hold warmth without trapping heat and remain dry against the body. This thinking continues in Nezen, a line that brings a more pared-back focus to material and form, drawing from Zen ideas of simplicity and reduction. Natural materials such as down, linen, cotton, and camel hair are selected for how they breathe, regulate, and wear over time, creating bedding and accessories that support a stable and comfortable sleep environment throughout the year
